Reply to a Christian by Sam Harris.

If you are a budding atheist you probably should learn more about Sam Harris. He, along with others such as Richard Dawkins and Daniel Dennett are leading the charge against irrational, childish, religious beliefs.
Below is Sam Harris' "Reply To A Christian" which is a superb, no nonsense look at the hypocrisy of religious teachings.

Reply to a Christian
By Sam Harris

Since the publication of my first book, The End of Faith, I have received thousands of letters and e-mails from religious believers insisting that I am wrong not to believe in God. Invariably, the most unpleasant of these communications have come from Christians. This is ironic, as Christians generally believe that no faith imparts the virtues of love and forgiveness more effectively than their own. Please accept this for what it is: the testimony of a man who is in a position to observe how people behave when their faith is challenged. Many who claim to have been transformed by Christ's love are deeply, even murderously, intolerant of criticism. While you may ascribe this to human nature, it is clear that the hatred these people feel comes directly from the Bible. How do I know this? Because the most deranged of my correspondents always cite chapter and verse.

Sinister and unnerving.

I’ve always thought there was something very sinister and unnerving about the Catholic church and now I see why.

An un-scientific observation.

This is a very un-scientific observation, but I must say that, as I look at all the people I know or have met, it seems that the more intelligent and educated a person is the less likely they are to believe in god.

There are many intelligent and well educated people who profess to a belief in god but they have to for the sake of their livelihood. Politicians, talk show hosts, teli-evangelists and so forth. Rush Limbaugh is a good example. Even though I disagree with almost everything that says, he is still clearly an intelligent person. His entire career is based on a right wing platform and that includes deference to the almighty. I don’t believe for a second that he really believes the god story but for the sake of his career he has to.

If fact the only exception to this rule that I can see is me!
I’m a somewhat stupid person and yet it’s obvious to me that god is a man made myth.

Disclaimer stickers for the Bible.

In light of the recent request by religious groups that the creators of the movie "The DaVinci Code" put a disclaimer at the beginning of the film announcing that it's fiction, I thought it's about time we pointed out the same obvious truth concerning the Bible.

So if you plan on staying in a hotel please help me out.

There will always be a Bible in the nightstand drawer (In America anyway) and if you have a spare moment, print a sheet of these disclaimer labels so that you can stick them on the inside cover.

NOTE:
This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places and incidents either are the product of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously, and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, business establishments, events or locales is entirely coincidental.

Either use the above text to create your own labels or click here to go to a PDF file to print them on 2" X 4" address labels and then stick the little buggers in every damn Bible you can find.

This is what we should be afraid of...

New Book Examines Christian Nationalism

Fresh Air from WHYY, May 11, 2006

Journalist Michelle Goldberg, a senior writer for the online magazine Salon, and covers the Christian Right. In her new book, Kingdom Coming: The Rise of Christian Nationalism, she writes that Christian nationalists believe the Bible is literally true -- and they want to see the nation governed by that truth.

Axis of Feeble (Wow!)

The Economist magazine ran this cover on May 13th 2006.

Usually when a magazine makes a controversial statement like this they temper it with a question mark.

Notice there is no such mark here.

A simple definition of Left Vs Right.

A simple definition of the difference between those on the Right and those on the Left is this.

To people on the Right everything is black and white.
To members of the Left everything is shades of gray.

If you are honest in your opinion and will truly look at facts and evidence you’ll see that nothing is ever black and white. NOTHING.

You can say that it’s wrong to kill and that is an absolute truth. However, when our leaders send us off to fight a war and kill others that’s allowed.
If you believe in the Bible don’t try and argue the claim that it’s wrong to murder and not to “Kill” because the Bible clearly says “Thou shalt not kill” It also doesn’t make it clear what we shouldn’t kill. It just says that we must not and yet we have to kill animals all day every day in order to eat.
So even the most fundamental rule of our society is gray.

The fallacy of a link between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda.

The administration has claimed there were links between Al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein because known terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was spotted in Iraq some months before 911.

If this assertion is true and holds water as proof of a link between the two parties then I must now point out that there is then clearly a link between the terrorists and George Bush because all 19 hijackers were not only spotted in America in the days, weeks and months leading up to 911 but we have video of them boarding planes at American airports.

The truth is that there was no link between Hussein and Al Qaeda because radical Islamic terrorists hate Saddam Husein more than they hate us because he ran Iraq as a non Islamic state.

They couldn't have asked for a more pleasant outcome to 911 than having us, invade Iraq and oust Saddam Hussein for them.

Our stupid fucking president and his asshole advisors played right into their hands.

(I debated removing the words "Fucking" and "asshole" but they so aptly describe my feelings that I decided to leave them in. Another good description for George Bush would also, of course, be "Shit for brains")

Lets sing the Mexican national anthem in English.

I’ve had an idea.
To really show these damn Mexicans that we mean business and that we will not tolerate them coming over here and doing things lets do this.

Lets sing their national anthem in English.

Can you imagine how upset they will be? They’ll take to the streets in protest. Their little Mexican faces will be shiny with tears. They will probably shake their fists in hearty defiance not caring that they are holding a burrito and a couple of tacos that get all mangled.

Oh wait a minute I’m forgetting something. They’re not stupid like American conservatives are. They’ll probably not give a rats ass (arse).

Damn!

They hate us for our Freedom.

How many times have we heard George Bush say that?

This seems to me to be a particularly stupid thing to say about people who live in an area that has no functioning government, no police and no army.

They have no one to tell them what they can and can’t do. They have all the freedom in the world right now. If they want to play loud music after 10pm there is no one to stop them. If they want to kidnap a bus full of trainee police and kill them they can.

And George Bush is trying to make us believe that the “terrorists” hate us because they’re jealous of our freedom. Because we have a police force just down the road, a county sheriff in a local city and a state police post not to far away. We have an army national-guard base in the area and a regular army post near by. We have the CIA the NSA the FBI the ATF all watching to make sure that we don’t break any of the thousands of laws that govern our behavior.

Yep, all this makes the “terrorists’ mighty jealous.

So stop saying it George. It just makes you look even more stupid than you already look.

Oh and please stop invoking the memory of 911 to scare the American people into rushing for the false safety of the protective arms of your government where, once paralyzed by fear, they can be quietly blinded to your destruction of the constitution.

Thanks buddy.

Little evidence to support creation.

If an atheist ever tells you that there is little evidence that god created the universe you should make it very clear that they are wrong. Very wrong!
There is, in fact, NO evidence. None. Not a grain of sand sized piece of evidence that any supernatural being had anything to do with the existence of anything.

There is however mountains of evidence that proves evolution. Mountains of the damn stuff.

Sadly though there does also seem to be compelling evidence that we are now devolving. Just peer through the window of any church on a Sunday morning. Or go to a school board meeting is Arkansas. Or better yet, listen to the anti science propaganda that spews from the current American leaders.

It’s all very very sad.
